Liverpool-based building services consultancy Steven Hunt & Associates has been awarded the mechanical and electrical design project for the University of Liverpool’s £6.1m Management School scheme.

Designed by Austin-Smith Lord, the project will be undertaken by the university’s in-house construction company ULCCO and comprises a refurbishment of parts of the existing Chatham Building, along with a four-storey 32,000 sq ft extension.

A 10kW photo-voltaic solar panel installation on the roof of the extension will contribute to the Management School’s low carbon strategy and reduced operational costs, with LED lighting throughout to reduce energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

Steven Hunt & Associates will also be responsible for designing all small power and ventilation systems, which include a combination of controlled natural ventilation and fan coil units connected to new chillers.

Alex Beedle, managing director of ULCCO, said:

"This project brings together a local supply chain to enhance the University of Liverpool’s Management School in a project that will develop facilities in line with the department’s excellent reputation, which has recently seen it ranked within the top 80 business schools in Europe.

"Integrating building services for a major new build with an existing building and district heating infrastructure is a challenging brief but Steven Hunt & Associates has the expertise and focus on sustainability to offer an ideal fit for this project."
